Happy family in corn field

We dream of fungicide-free agriculture

And to get there, we develop field crops with natural and multi-sited resistance against fungal infections.
Reach out
Every year more than 3.5 million tons of pesticides are used in global agriculture, and about a third of these are fungicides. Half of these fungicides are synthetic chemicals that contaminate our drinking water, food, and environment, harming biodiversity and leading to resistant pathogens.

Despite the widespread use of fungicides, farmers still experience yield losses caused by fungal infections.

Take corn in the US as an example: depending on the weather conditions, every year 2% to 15% of the yield is lost because of fungal infections. Posing an even greater farm management risk for the individual grower.

And just 2% of the corn produced in the US can feed more than 70 million people for an entire year.

The solution

Fungal infections are a major problem in agriculture, leading to annual yield losses even when fungicides are applied. Moreover, the infecting fungi produce toxins which end up in the food chain challenging our food safety.

The fungicides currently used leave a considerable environmental footprint, contaminating drinking water, damaging biodiversity, and trigger resistance in fungi affecting humans and animals.

By growing crops with natural resistance, we can minimize the need for fungicides in agriculture.

We have found a naturally occurring plant enzyme called Nepenthesin. Nepenthesin is a protease normally involved in the defense against fungal infections.

Through genome editing techniques, we have increased the amount of Nepenthesin produced within the plant. When overexpressed, Nepenthesin effectively degrades the fungal enzymes essential for nutrient release, starving the fungi and blocking their growth on the crop, resulting in a highly fungal resistant crop.

Sustainability

Minimizing fungicide use support several of the UN sustainability goals as explained on the left.

Our solution also aligns perfectly with the 'EU Farm to Fork' strategy by enabling sustainable food production. The 'Farm to Fork' strategy is at the heart of the 'European Green Deal' aiming to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly.

  • Zero Hunger

Growing plants with natural resistance will not only increase yields but also ensure a more stable food supply.

  • Good Health and Well-Being

Spraying with fungicides trigger resistance in pathogens infecting humans and animals making them hard to treat, minimizing the use of fungicides will lead to fewer resistance pathogens.

  • Clean Water and Sanitation

Some of the fungicides used end up in our drinking water, so not spraying will improve the quality of our drinking water.

  • Responsible Consumption and Production

Eliminating the use of fungicides makes agriculture more sustainable and reduces impact on the environment and biodiversity.

  • Climate Action

Growing crops with natural resistance significantly reduces the CO2 emissions from agriculture and fungicide production.

  • Life on Land

Chemical fungicides affect the biodiversity, growing crops with natural resistance allows the biodiversity to thrive.

We welcome cooperation with commercial partners and research institutions

We always seek new cooperation partners to join forces with us in making the vision of fungicide-free agriculture come true. Currently, our focus includes several major field crops, including corn, soy, wheat, potato, and barley. However, we are open to projects involving other crops of your interest.
